Sweet Grass 4 Plants - Hierochloe oderata - Sacred Overview

Sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata) is grown for its use in Native American and other rituals, as an incense. It can be smoked but the healthfulness of this is very dubious. It has a soft sweet scent, and need not be burned to be enjoyed. Live plants can be grown around the house, as living incense.

Sweetgrass occurs in the wild in both North America and northern Europe. The Native Americans used it for scenting the floors of their tents, and as part of ritual costumes. In Northern Europe (particularly Russia), it is known as Mary's Grass, and was strewn on church steps for Saints' Days. It is also known as Zebrovka, Seneca Grass, Holy Grass, and Buffalo Grass (but should not be confused with Buchloe dactyloides buffalo grass).

Hierochloe odorata prefers moist soil, and partial shade. It can withstand full sun in temperate climates and withstands winter excellently. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Sweetgrass spreads primarily through its roots. Two kinds of stems grow, the stout ones with flowers, and the lanky sterile stems. Sweetgrass is harvested by pulling off sterile stems. It's the sterile stems that are used for braiding and basketry. They grow 18-24 inches. One "plug" (a stem or two with a few inches of frizzly rhizome) can typically cover a square foot in a year. (It's recommended by growers that harvesting take place after this initial period.)

Wild stands of Sweetgrass are disappearing, due to "overpulling". When this biomass is removed from the sweetgrass stand, a little of the more precious trace nutrients is lost.

* NOTE: Sweetgrass Hierochloe odorata exists in wild stands in Connecticut, Maine, Massachussetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. It is classified as "endangered" in Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. There are four other species species of sweetgrass (alpina, hirta, occidentalis, and pauciflora); they're not as strongly fragrant as odorata.

There is nothing like being barefoot in zoysia grass in the South. Zoysia can tolerate wide variations in temperature, sunlight, and water, these grasses are among the most widely used for lawns in temperate climates. They are used on golf courses to create fairways and teeing areas. Zoysia grasses stop erosion on slopes, and are excellent at repelling weeds throughout the year.[4] They resist disease and hold up well under traffic. The cultivar Zoysia 'Emerald' (Emerald Zoysia; a hybrid between Z. japonica and Z. tenuifolia[5]) is particularly popular.

In subtropical climates of North America, zoysia grass has naturalized in places. For landscape use it is available commercially as sod in some areas. In typical savanna climates (warm wet/dry seasons) such as southern Florida, zoysia grows during the warm-wet summer and is dormant in the drier, cooler winter months. It is popular because of its fine texture and soft feel, and low growth habit. It can form dense mats and even mounds that grow over low features.

Chinese Silver Grass 25 Seeds - Miscanthus Overview

Miscanthus sinensis is the premier ornamental grass--a garden favorite for centuries. There are literally hundreds of cultivars differing in blade size, shape, and color pattern; plant height and texture; summer, autumn and winter foliage colors; flower timing and color; and cold hardiness. What they have in common are a clump forming habit (never forming turf), in which the leaves grow up and then cascade out and down like a fountain; foliage that turns various shades of gold or bronze in autumn and holds up well throughout the winter; erect flowers that shine in the summer sun, then turn soft and fluffy in winter, and persist beautifully in dried arrangements; and a preference for sunny positions in the landscape. The wild form is a large bunch grass, growing up to 12 feet tall and 5 feet wide, with leaf blades almost 1 inch across. The leaves are medium green with a prominent white midrib and dry to straw yellow in winter. The dense inflorescence, produced in late summer, is reddish purple, aging to silvery. Chinese Silver Grass has large feathery plumes of silver flowers that are held way above the 5 foot (1.5 m) mound of cascading green foliage. Even the flower stalks, which can get 7 feet (2.1 m) tall, will fall over, but they still look good. This is one of the most cold-hardy cultivars, and it will flower even in zone 4.The original Miscanthus sinensis, from which the many horticultural selections have been made, still grows wild in eastern China, Korea, Japan, the Ryukus, and Taiwan. Old foliage should be cut back to the ground at the end of winter before new growth starts. Most of the Miscanthus sinensis cultivars do best in full sun. They can survive partial shade, but they tend to get thin and lanky, and then flop over. Most of the cultivars are actually quite drought tolerant, but all perform best with regular watering. Some can grow at poolside with their feet in the water. Hardy Zones 4-9.
